Elizabeth Eve meets ... Thats My Baby Blog

We caught up with the lovely Victoria from Thats My Baby Blog, mum to Charlie (2 years) and Holly (9 months) to find out more about her love of writing and her favourite products for mums and dads!

'I’m a secondary school English teacher, so I love curling up with a book or talking about a book, or browsing for more books. You get the picture! Aside from that, I’m the eternal tourist: I love travel and sight seeing (my husband says I have a weakness for ruins and I have a sneaky suspicion he might be right!). I love the outdoors and get grumpy if I haven’t been outside during the day. My glass is half full and I think most things can be fixed and are rarely lost, which means I can spends hours searching for something insignificant so I can keep believing that!'

What inspired you to blogging?

I've always loved reading other people's blogs (when we were planning our wedding, renovating our house or making travel plans), so knew it was something I wanted to do when the time was right, but it wasn't until my first pregnancy that I realised what I was going to write about.

What is your favourite product that you have featured?

There have been so many favourites and I've got some really great ones coming up, but I can't include those can I? Okay, I've chosen! It would have to be our Babybjörn baby bouncer. Ours is a gorgeous soft blue mesh fabric which is perfect for the summer months and warm enough for the winter too, plus they fold entirely flat so you can take them anywhere and that’s a huge plus.

Are there challenges when writing a blog?

Oh my goodness, yes!  When I started blogging I thought the challenge would be deciding what to write about, but it's taking the photos: sometimes I spend hours trying to get the right image, but come away disappointed because of poor light. They're so worth it when you get them right though and have become my favourite part of the process; I've learnt so much about photography and I love that there is still so much more to discover about it.

What is your favourite thing to write about?

Hmm, that's a really good question and a tricky one! I haven't done much beauty for a while, but I really love that, otherwise it's posts about days out or products that fit with our daily lives. Have I cheated there and avoided the question? I've cheated, haven't I? Sorry.

We love the 'From the Bookshelf' section of your blog! Whats your top kids book?

Oh, thank you! It's one of my favourite sections on the blog which, I guess, is no surprise given I'm an English teacher! As you’ve probably guessed from my previous answers, pinning me down to one is tricky and even more so when it comes to a book but, Zog by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler is one that we read lots and it always gets several encores. I love that Donaldson's stories rhyme as they create natural rhythms we all recognize, plus she bucks the trend for gender stereotypes (the princess in this story is actually a doctor) which are subtle yet powerful and Scheffler's illustrations sit alongside the stories perfectly.

Any top tips for anyone wanting to start a blog?

I love that you've asked this question! Firstly, work out what you'd like to write about and see if those things sit well together and, if you only have one thing you want to blog about, try to work out what offshoots there are so you can categorise your blog. Once you've done that, I think you need to see whether any of that fits in to your daily life because you’re more likely to make it work and enjoy it if they do. Research your topics to see what other bloggers are doing; the blogging world is always changing so follow bloggers with similar interests.

What’s your holy grail product for new mums?

I’m cheating again! For mums, it would have to be Clarins Treatment Oil. Lots of us take care of our skin when we’re pregnant (I used Clarins every day when I was pregnant), but find it difficult to make the time once baby is born. I used their firming and toning oil in the bath and before bed most nights; it’s such a treat for your skin and the gorgeous aroma helped me drift off. For our babies, it would have to be Red Castle’s cocoonababy as it solves all sorts of sleep struggles for little ones. If you haven’t heard of it, look it up.

What’s your holy grail product for parents with toddlers?

A good cup. I know it’s simple, but a cup that doesn’t leak is so hard to find yet essential as you want your toddler to keep their fluids up while they’re racing around. We alternate between a Camelbak kids’ one and Munchkin’s miracle 360.

What have you got planned for 2017?

Lots! On the topic of toddlers, I’ve got a series of posts coming up that are focusing on their developing independence (routines, nursery, swimming) as well as some baby weaning posts and am collaborating with a number of brands on those. I’m also planning more days out posts as I only started doing them last summer and they got great feedback.

Where else can we find you?

Aside from my blog, I love instagram (@thatsmybabyblog). I’m on twitter too, but I’m an insta girl at heart. It’s such a positive platform and works perfectly with my love of photography so I always have a scroll whenever I post a picture myself.
